Will Sweden be the seventh country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage? With 71% of the population accepting of same-sex marriages, it looks like it may just be.
1st there was the Netherlands in April 2001. Then came Belgium in June 2002. Then came a pause. Swiftly came July 3rd and July 20th 2005 when Spain and Canada legalized same-sex marriage. Then in a twist South Africa became the first African country to legalize it in December 2006. January 1 of this year was when Norway became number 6 to let same-sex marriages be performed. Will Sweden be 7?
This last wednesday a bill was introduced into Sweden's parliament asking to over rule a 1987 law that stated that marriage was between a heterosexual couple. This could very easily lead to same-sex marriages become legal considering that over 70% of the population is in favor of it.
But Sweden better hurry up. November 19 of last year, Nepal's Supreme Court ordered the government to start allowing same-sex marriages, but who knows when that will happen. So the race for number 7 is on!
