Australia is a last minute entry into the race to be 7th country to allow same-sex marriage, and it's put itself near the front of the pack. Australia will allow same-sex marriage starting July 1st, but there is a catch.
Australia will only recognize same-sex marriages where the marriage began as between a man and a woman, and then one of them had a sex change. Although its not the exact marriage equality we wanted, it's on the right track.
But the real question is, who will be # 7? Sweden, Portugal, Nepal or Australia. It's an extremely tight race between Sweden and Australia right now. Australia will allow (some) same-sex marriages on July 1st, but Sweden will vote on same-sex marriages on May 1st, giving them 2 months breathing room to start allowing marriages. And since it is highly expected that the Swedish bill will pass, we just await until May 1st in order to see who will be crowned lucky number 7.
