The Flag of Equal Marriage

I love it when people take good ideas and replicate them. Especially when the idea is not an often referred to idea. One such idea came from the Women's Suffrage Movement.

It's sometimes hard for us to remember that there was a time when women did not have the same rights as men. During this time there was a huge push by certain people to extend the rights given to men, to women too. During this time an idea came about to punish the states that did not extend equal rights to women, remove them from the U.S. Flag! The flag they created had only 4 stars on it, one for each state that took away the discrimination against women. And now, the same has begun with the gay rights movement.

Carl Tashian from New York started a protest flag with the same idea as the women's rights movement had. When he first created the flag it only had 2 stars on it, one for Massachussetts and one for California. Then Connecticut became the third state to allow same-sex marriage, the flag was upgraded to the 3 stars, showing our progress. Then the voters of California did something stupid. They decided they didn't like having a star on the American flag so they voted to make the LGBT community second class citizens.

Now the flag is sadly down to 2 stars, but this presents us with a challenge. There are 50 states in this country, and 48 more spots to fill on this flag. We as a people can do it, we can progress. We can change. We elected Obama in a landslide didn't we? So let us change this flag, and let us start with California. Let us put our star back on the flag!
