Prop 8: The Second Stonewall? (opinion piece)

So I just read this AMAZING opinion piece by Robert A Bernstein who talks about Proposition 8 and how it is turning into the stonewall of our generation.

Bernstein mentions how the passing of proposition 8 has revitalized the gay community that has been dormant for so long. Families, friends, and others throughout the country are angered that such a hateful piece of legislation could be passed and now are called up to arms in order to make legislation like this a part of the past.

One of the key things that Bernstein talks about is that the anger and rage that all the opponents of prop 8 contain have a very easy target to be unleashed upon, the Mormon Church. Already the church is feeling a backlash for supporting proposition 8. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Mormons are leaving the church that they once were members of. Bernstein even talks about a woman who is a 7th generation Mormon who is quitting the church because of its stance. Now that is intense! And shortly after the passage of Proposition 8, thousands marched against Mormon Temples in Salt Lake City.

The Mormon Church naturally did not expect this kind of backlash. They probably thought everyone would be happy with something like this. Bernstein makes an excellent observation which I will shorten, they are stupid. They forgot that we are living in an information world where news travels extraordinarily fast. One rumor spreads quicker than you can douse it. And since we aren't in China they can't just bribe their way into locking out a website they don't like. And they can't just pretend they didn't do anything like they did with equal rights amendments in the 70's.

The best part is that Mormons are so preachful about 'traditional marriage' between one man and one woman when they were the ones who started off preaching that one man can have as many women that he can lay his hands on and basically keep them as slaves. Maybe they should look at how their own ideals were hurt because people refused to think outside of the box.

And the icing on the cake? Apparently Stanford University refused to play BYU in a bowl game. Go Stanford! (You would have won anyway.)
