Could Portugal be the Seventh Country to Allow Same-Sex Marriages?

It seems as though Portugal is starting to get in line to allow same-sex marriages, but will they be able to get in line quick enough be number 7?

The leader of the Socialist party in Portugal, [ Jose Socrates, has said that he supports same-sex marriage. With the Socialists currently controlling the government in Portugal, this is a good thing. But even within his party Socrates has opposition. The former leader and creator of the Socialist party, Mario Soares, said, "there are certain radicals who want to move forward [with same-sex marriages] to show that they are leftist." Socialist Youth leader Duarte Cordeiro countered Soares with the comment that, "it’s a fundamental issue for the left and I don’t think it is radicalism." Unfortunately Portugal is still a fairly conservative country so it may take it a while in order to allow same-sex marriages, but they are on the right track.]{.body}

[But can they get there quick enough to be the seventh country to allow same-sex marriages? Highly unlikely. As the world currently stands, Sweden is inching closer and closer to the finish line in the race to be number seven. The vote on same-sex marriage has been tabled until May 1 where a vote will take place to decide its fate, which looks fairly optimistic. Three out of the four parties in the ruling coalitions (]{.body}the Liberals, the Centre Party, and the conservative Moderates) all support gay-marriages, while the christian Democrats do not. And the largest opposition party, the Social Democrats, also support the bill. Now its just a waiting game for Sweden to allow the marriages to begin.
