"The Women's Resource Center of Armenia with the cooperation of Utopiana, WOW and other NGOs, intends to mark March 8 (International Women's Day), by performing a funeral rite to bury the “Red Apple”, one of the cultural traditions still popular in most parts of Armenia. The Center declares this practice to be demeaning to women and a violation of their human rights. "

For those of you who don't know what the "Red Apple" refers to, I'll quickly explain. Armenian women are expected to be virgins when they get married and thus after the marriage the will have intercourse for the 'first time.' Naturally when this happens she will bleed and the sheets will become red because of it. This is then shown to the families in order to show that she was 'pure' and thus worthy of marriage. It's a horrible tradition and is horrible for Women's rights. I applaud the Women's Resource Center of Armenia and all those in cooperation for demonstrating against this tradition.
