Italy

Italy is back with a fun upbeat song this year! I like this song even though it is probably not my favorite of all time. But what outfit is Nina wearing?! I give her the zebra award. The outfit does nothing for her. Hopefully her on stage outfit will be a lot better.

The song itself is fun to listen to. She has a really good voice, but her range is not really shown in this song. Seems like Italy is trying to play it safe. I like the background beat, but it does get repetitive after a little while. with how she is performing I don’t expect Italy to get very far this year unfortunately. We’ll see how they do in the onstage performance.

LOVE IS FEMALE (OUT OF LOVE)

unbelievable
i can’t wait to go
but like a rolling stone
you hit me BoomBoomBoom

if you were my king
would i be your queen?
stop breaking up my heart
you kill me BoomBoomBoom

(day&night it’s a fight)
don’t know where you are
when i’m close you’re far
oh, no no
(day&night, it’s a lie)
i waste my tears and you shoot pool

LOVE IS FEMALE
UNLESS PLEASED IT WILL NOT PLEASE
this is the mess u left
i’m out of love and it’s a fact (u left, out of love and it’s a fact)
i’m sure you’ll smile
you have to go
you’re an independent grown man after all
out of love
must have been sent from up above
la la la

have you turned to stone?
king without a throne
you’re great but not impressive
lots of up and low

it’s so tipical
when it’s time to go
you knock me on the floor
my heart goes BoomBoomBoom

(day&night it’s a fight)
don’t know where to start
when you’re close i’m far
oh, no no
(day&night it’s a lie)
i dried my tears but you want more

LOVE IS FEMALE
UNLESS PLEASE IT WILL NOT PLEASE
clean up the mess you left
i’m out of love and it’s a fact
i’m sure you’ll smile
ready to go
you’re an indipendent grown man after all
out of love
must have been sent from up above
la la la

WOW IT IS HOT
i’ll let you think twice
i don’t wanna cause any pressure
but have you asked yourself why
i bought a brand new gun shot

LOVE IS FEMALE
UNLESS PLEASED IT WILL NOT PLEASE (TIC TAC UNLESS PLEASED IT WILL NOT PLEASE)
I TAKE IT EASY
I CALCULATE MY CHANCES (tic tac one chance)
WHAT YOU WANT
UNLESS YOU DO NOT HAVE IT
WE ARE ALL MORE UNSATISFIED THAN EVER
FEMALE, UNLESS PLEASED IT WILL NOT PLEASE

France

The award for the weirdest music video goes to France! The tune to the song is a catchy tune and is really nice in the beginning. It seems like it’s going to be an amazing song, but then after the beginning minute or so I found myself getting really bored of it. I wanted something more exciting to happen. I guess we’ll just have to see if she can echo her first minute into the other few and get something good going during her live performance.

Performer: Anggun
Song title: Echo (You And I)
Song writer(s): William Rousseau & Anggun
Song composer(s): Jean Pierre Pilot & William Rousseau

You and I, you and I
I hear the echo of our steps to the beat
Always march in a new direction
We’re moving ahead, but what are we chasing?

I hear the echo of our hopes and aspirations
Beyond the day, until the night
We’re carrying each other away but what are we chasing?

Losing each other and hoping
In a way, we’re going astray
Someday beyond this
We’ll find each other back
In my dreams, in my dreams
In my heart, in my mind
I see you and I, there is you and I

I hear the echo of our swinging steps
All over the place, always to the same dance
We’re moving ahead, but what are we chasing?

Losing each other and hoping
In a way, we’re going astray
Someday beyond this
We’ll find each other back
In my dreams, in my dreams
In my heart, in my mind
I see you and I, there is you and I
There is you and I, there is you and I

I hear the echo of your voice going away from me
The echo of a love will return one day
It carries me away and I start chasing you
Losing each other and hoping
In a way, we’re going astray
Someday beyond this
We’ll find each other back
In my dreams, in my dreams
In my heart, in my mind
I see you and I, there is you and I

F.Y.R. Macedonia

F.Y.R. Macedonia brings us Kaliopi this year with a heart wrenching breakup song. And if you listened to the whole song you’ll understand why F.Y.R. Macedonia gets the screaming award. I don’t know where that scream came from, but it didn’t fit in to well with the rest of the song.

The song itself was very repetitive and didn’t really get interesting until about halfway through when the beat changed. Even with the beat change I didn’t feel much from the song. Although Kaliopi sang the song amazingly, I think the song itself was just not very good, which is funny considering she wrote the song herself. After listening to the song a few times her voice also does get annoying, but considering not many people have seen the song and will experience it for the first time, that will give her a slight advantage. We’ll see how well her voice performs on stage though.

Baby look into my eyes
Eyes don’t know how to fake
I am fragile but won’t break
This pain is sweet, a sweet defeat

Darling open up your soul
Let go of all control
You’re the restles part of me
You’re the dreamer in my sea

I’m being born again
In your every breath

Everything’s black and white
Only one truth, only one lie
Sharing the same delight
I choose to smile, you choose to cry

Everything’s black and white
The good, the bad, equal, the same
Day drowns in the night
As you pool me, back in the game

Baby look into my eyes
I’m weareing no disguise
I’m naked, wild and free
Now it’s time, step into me

Darling open up your soul
Let go of all control
You’re the restless part of me
You’re the dreamer in my sea

I’m being born again
With your every breath …
Everything’s black and white
Only one truth, only one lie
Sharing the same delight
I choose to smile, you choose to cry

Everything’s black and white
The good, the bad, equal, the same
Day drowns in the night
As you pool me, back in the game

Everything’s black and white.

Slovenia

Slovenia this year seems to be going for the crazy hat theme. I still don’t know what those hats are supposed to be. They look like a solar system being formed or something. For these crazy hats Slovenia wins the crazy hat award.

If you were to take away the hats you would begin to hear a fairly good song. The song is not traditionally fast and doesn’t quite qualify as a ballad. Eva’s voice is not strong enough to make this song into a ballad like it probably should be. Although this song is not the best in this competition, it just doesn’t pull me in with anything. It seems too safe of a song. And as most safe songs go, this will also fail.

Performer: Eva Boto
Song title: Verjamem
Song writer(s): Igor Pirkovič
Song composer(s): Vladimir Graić, Hari Mata Hari

I yearn, from depths across the sky
I’m painting sun
In my dreams just for him
I cast light onto his shadows
Which say goodbye without memory
Through gaps between my fingers
The sand of time will ebb away

I believe that we’ll again find a common beat
And that yesterday will return forever
With a river of light
Even the song will find its way to rhymes
If I follow him

I feel that I’m going down to the bottom
A silent voice sings in a minor key
But there won’t be a wind
To rustle white flags

I believe that we’ll again find a common beat
And that yesterday will return forever
With a river of light

A new day is hungry for the sun and is sincere.

I never surrender until the very end
I survive in my own way
With yearning

Slovakia

Slovakia this year lines us up with Max Jason Mai who sings us a powerful rock song. Max himself looks like a stereotypical Rockstar winning him the rockstar award for this competition. Although I really like the beat and feel of the song I doubt it will go very far. Rock songs don’t generally go over very well with the Eurovision crowd, and on top of that Slovakia does not have a history of doing very well. So far they have never made it to any top 10 position. In fact, since the start of the semi-finals, Slovakia has never made it to the finals. Will this year be Slovakia’s year to make it? I unfortunately doubt it.

DON´T CLOSE YOUR EYES

God save me …

Hey, where is the way
to heaven’s hell
That’s what I ask
When I feel broken…

Look around what‘s happening abounds
And listen to the frequency of a sound
Of the beat, of a heartbeat, of your death beat

Don’t close your eyes
And pray all the night
Try to call all angels
To save our lives

How do you feel now?
After all fails in love
Embraced by devil’s arms

Look around what‘s happening abounds
And listen to the frequency of a sound
Of the beat, of a heartbeat, of your death beat

Don’t close your eyes
And pray all the night
Try to call all angels
To save our lives

Let me get out of here
Let me get out of here
Let me get out of here
Let me get out of here

Save me …

Don’t close your eyes (Stay awake)
And pray all the night (Say your prayer now)
Try to call all angels (Angels above)
To save our lives (Save our lives)

Don’t close your eyes (Don’t close your eyes)
To save our lives

Russia is holding onto that top lead, but they are one of the slowest gainers this time around. Seems like Cyprus is trying to drive it home as they are quickly catching up to Russia! I wonder when they’ll be hitting 1 million views. 3rd place is slowly opening up with Azerbaijan making huge gains this week and Turkey and Germany making large gains as well. UK is falling slowly, but their view count is still fairly high. Sweden had a massive gain this week though. They had almost a 40% increase in views! I think this might be due to Sweden’s video starting to gain popularity in the states, but we’ll see what happens to Sweden and if they can time their peak to coincide with the big competition.

Croatia

This year Croatia sends us the powerful singer Nina Badrić. We’ll start off by handing Nina the naked man award! When watching the video associated with this song you will quickly notice that most of the song has half naked men randomly falling with nothing by a bed sheet around their groins. Oh how I wish those sheets were not there! But that’s an issue for another day.

Nina gives us a wonderful ballad that very quickly reminded me of Serbia’s winner from 2007. If you were around then you will very quickly remember Molitva by Marija Šerifović. Marija just destroyed the stage with her song. Most analysts though she wouldn’t win, but due to politics and her epic performance she came to beat the competition by over 70 points. The only question that Nina has to answer is how powerful is her song?

In order to come back and win this competition like Marija did 5 years ago, Nina has to perform this song without error. She needs to take all the emotion she has ever had and just bear it out on the stage for all to see. If her performance can show the strength that Marija’s did a few years back then she might just have a chance of getting really far in this competition. Who knows, she might just be the upset this year and take Eurovision to Croatia.

Listen to me when I say, there’s nothing I haven’t tried.
You’re still in my thoughts, you still feel mine.
And I hear you’re in love and people tell me
That you just don’t care.
Like I’ve lost my mind, I still keep hoping for you.
Well heaven settles every debt and remembers everything you owe.
Each of us dreams, but heaven sets the path along which you go.
Heaven settles every debt, someone up above sees it all,
And these tears of mine will weigh heavily on your soul.

I will hide myself behind cold wet streets,
So that no one may ever see
That I meant nothing to you.
And I hear you’re in love and people tell me
That you just don’t care.
Like I’ve lost my mind,
I still keep hoping for you.
Well heaven settles every debt and remembers everything you owe.
Each of us dreams, but heaven sets the path along which you go.
Heaven settles every debt, someone up above sees it all,
And these tears of mine will weigh heavily on your soul.

Heaven settles every debt,
Someone up above sees it all,
Heaven settles every debt.

Serbia

Today’s award is given to Mr. Joksimović and shall be known as the fake award. Watch how Željko smirks the whole time pleading with the audience, “come back home with me.” He seems to be a player of sorts and has an aura that he can get any woman in the room. If this song was about passion that would have been perfect, if this song had been about his love-making skills that would have been perfect, if this song had been about his man-hood that would have been perfect, but it is not.

Serbia’s song this year is about a man who has lost his lover. Not just any lover mind you, but the only love he has ever loved. “I’ve only ever loved you” Željko says in multiple ways and implies that he will never love another person again. Yet, as stated before, Željko seems to be trying to get everyone from the audience to fall in love with him and come back home with him. For someone who just love his love he seems way to happy and way to exuberant. If he had showed his emotions more correctly I would have liked this song much more.

Better luck next time,
You say that so easily.
I can see we’re over now,
But it could have been so good.
Know that even if you leave,
Something yours will stay.

Love is not a thing,
That I can just give back to you.
This is only me,
I’ve only ever loved you

Love is not a thing,
That I don’t know what do to with,
I wish you just the best,
This love is my sinking ship.

Your love is not a thing,
That I can just give back to you.
This is only me,
I’ve only ever loved you.

My love is not a thing,
That I don’t know what to do with,
I wish you just the best,
This is my sinking ship.

Go,just, just go,
Fly away, sing,
Give your heart to someone else,
But know
That goodbye is not the end.

My love is not a thing,
That I don’t know what to do with,
I wish you just the best,
This is my sinking ship.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria seems to be pushing against racism this year with their song ‘Love Unlimited’. For a song that talks about loving no matter the race Bulgaria wins the equality award! The song preaches not having any boundaries when it comes to love which is very amazing. Although she doesn’t reference same-sex love as well she probably would not be against it. I’m glad that Bulgaria has brought a forward thinking person as their singer this year.

The song itself is ok. It is not the best of the songs out there, but it definitely is not the worst. Her voice can be a little annoying at times when she gets into the higher octaves, but other than that Sofi does a fairly good job. I’m undecided yet as to where Bulgaria will fall, but it will be a close call as to if they make it out of the semi-finals.

Love Unlimited:

Dorem dem dem dem!
Dorem dem dem dem!
Dorem dem dem dem ya!

The song has no borders, language or colour
It doesn`t recognize the rich and the poor
Everybody`s singing all over the world about love, always sings about love.
Love has no borders, language or colour
It’s one and the same for everyone in this world
For you, for me, for them

Seviyorum seni, Sagapao poli
Yo te quiero a ti, Volim te, mon cheri
I love you, I love only you
I’m saying I love you.
But dehaftu mange, Voglio bene a te
Men seni sevirem, Yahabibi, je t`aime
I love you, I love only you
There are no limits for us.

The pain has no border, language and colour
It doesn`t recognize the rich or the poor
Same tears fall down when life hurts us
The love has no border, language or colour
It’s equal for everyone
For you, for me, for them.

I love you so much!

Bosnia & Herzegovina

And the shortest song lyrics award goes to… Bosnia & Herzegovina! B&H tries to use each word sparingly and with a ton of emotion. No wonder they chose an amazing singer like Maya to sing this song. Her voice is very powerful and brings the necessary emotion to the song. Although I don’t personally feel like this song will do fairly well, Maya has brought in quite a few views on youtube which makes me think they might have a chance to make it into the finals. I definitely don’t think they will win, but they will at least make it to Saturday. Best of luck to Maya!

Everything I love
Hurts me the most
I still clearly hear
Those steps when You’re gone…

On and on tryin’ to understand
You have many worries
And I, I need to tell You that
Not now, ’cause You’re in a hurry…

Everything I lost
Miss’ the kindness You give
When, where, I don’t know
And if I ask, You just leave…

After all we’ve said and done
You seem more than strong
After all I don’t know where
Did I go wrong…

Don’t make it harder these days
I need love, don’t hurt my feelings
You’ve never suffered this way
‘Cause if You did, how come I’m bleeding, on and on
No more hiding, no lying
Will You give me reason to live
‘Cause I’m dying…

After all I don’t know how and where to start
As if we never, never said before
‘Till death do us apart…’
